Seems like it's origin's obscure but it's not just scottish. A badly made box in welding looks like a pig's ear. 'Pig's ear' is cockney rhyming slang for beer (not a subject you know much about though Jack  ) and maybe the mess made by a drunk is where the phrase comes from. Most likely though is from the mis-quote about making silk purses out of them and not doing it properly. This is apparently a mistranslation of "can't make a silk purse from sousier". Sousier (from the 16th century French coin the Sou) is a rough, French purse peasants used to keep their coins in; the phrase says you cannot make something quality from something rough and cheap.
Ironically a 'pig's ear' can also mean a good tidy job in sailing where certain types of sails when furled properly look like the shape of a pig's ear ! Always got to be difficult those sailors, girls - never marry one!
You even get educated on this forum. What a great place to be :)

And ta for the info, as I thought it was just one of my 'imagined' words / sayings'

8) Jack

OXFORD DICTIONARY DEFINITION

Main Entry: 1 Jackitis
Function: noun
Pronunciation: Jack ass

intransitive senses

1 b : to type idly

2 : to talk or write in a desultory or long-winded wandering fashion when exposed to Halloweenjack84 over long periods.

3 : to type or extend one sentence irregularly

transitive senses : to gibber like a madman.

Hey Hussettes!

Whilst on my 3 a.m. scavenge through The Hussy's trash cans, came across a little scribbled on piece of paper with the embryonic lyrics for 'The Greatest Living Actor '

Also found a carelessly discarded half empty container of PVC glue, and found that after inhaling *said contents* of this container ( to confirm that it was PVC glue. ) I could actually hear the little embryonic version of this song ..

If the song is half as good as I *imagined* , then all Hussettes are in for a classic !!!!!!!!!
( *PVC glue induced lyrics* have been typed out and the song lyrics post updated ! )

 Jack
