Excellent song Kim, it's between that and A Town Called Malice for me :)

"Town Called Malice" is another favorite of mine, the bass line blows me away even though it's W-A-Y too similiar to "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes.

I have never heard "Man In the Corner Shop".

Maybe Jack will see fit to email that tune. PLEASE...
(I'll send you "You Can't Hurry Love"...)

Eve K!

''Man In The Corner Shop ' should be in your mail box as you read.

Was sent in Mp4a format, so hope I've sent correctly and that you enjoy. :D

As for The Supremes 'Can't Hurry Love', of course being a massive Motown fan I have all of the Supremes music.

Thanx for the offer though.

Now If you were gonna send Phil Collin's 'Can't Hurry Love', you'd be instantly added to my spam list !

Hope You Enjoy !

( Works better If you live in some sh*tty grey concrete industrial town in the north of England or Scotland, and have a sh*tty job. )

MAN IN THE CORNER SHOP
the jam

Puts up the closed sign does the man in the corner shop
Serves his last then he says goodbye to him
He knows it is a hard life
But its nice to be your own boss really
Walks off home does the last customer
He is jealous of the man in the corner shop
He is sick of working at the factory
Says it must be nice to be your own boss (really)

Sells cigars to the boss from the factory
He is jealous is the man in the corner shop
He is sick of struggling so hard
Says it must be nice to own a factory

Go to church do the people from the area
All shapes and classes sit and pray together
For here they are all one
For God created all men equal

I don't hear those Hussy's comparisons but I do hear the similarity between Itchycoo Park and That's Entertainment (I'd never noticed until I read this thread though) so it seems James has his first ally in this thread! It's amazing how quickly Spotify enabled me to test all of those out...

My band often gets comparisons I don't hear at all. The Clash happen a lot and we barely know three of their songs between us. It's still flattering to get compared to such revered bands though.

The main songwriter of Superdrag actually said he "rips-off the best music from the last 50 years and f***s it up enough so it sounds like Superdrag." I think he's putting himself down, Superdrag were easily one of the best bands of the 90s and are still kicking some ass now. Funny for me is the first song my brother wrote sounded like a complete rip-off of Superdrag, but he didn't intend it that way.

Eve TA !

Nice that James now has an ally regarding 'Itchycoo Park' & 'That's Entertainment'. :)
Probably because you are fellow musos and can hear all that stuff that goes over the heads of us untrained music folx.

Thought I knew a lot about musical history, but I never seem to know half the bands you mention.

Praise be for the glory that is Spotify as you mention !

Think the main songwriter of Superdrag is just doing a Bowie by stealing everybody elses music and f*ck*ng it up to make it his own .

Now where is Superdrag on Spotify ?

I'm quite sure I'd be classed in your untrained music folks category!

So Mr. Bowie said something like that too?

There are some bands from Superdrag's old UK record label on Spotify but unfortunately Superdrag aren't one of them. Head Trip in Every Key is the best album if you do find anything.

Still listen to "Sucked out" by Superdrag regularly. One of the best songs about being in a band and how big record companies destroy what most bands originally stand for. I've got the Christmas album as well. I'm a fan.

Cool, I like how I keep finding out that you like bands I like too!

I don't know if you have In the Valley of Dying Stars, but Keep it Close to Me (one of my favourites and the first tune I heard by them) is about the troubles they had with Elektra...

"I've got rock 'n' roll and it used to deliver me sweetly
I'm not gullible but I feel like I lost it completely
It's direct, suspect, insects have launched an invasion..."

...with the guys at Elektra being the insects of course. Superdrag were told by Elektra that they liked the music but the lyrics needed to be changed. The band managed to get out of their contract with Elektra and were able to release the record elsewhere. That insects line is "expect the unrealistic" on a demo I have so I don't know if that was a toned-down version before they left the label.

Awesome live band and thoroughly nice guys too. :)

Hmmm. Perhaps I was still with the Spiders from Mars. Has he admitted as much though?

I'm just sceptical when musician's get accused of stealing other people's ideas as virtually everything has been done before so how can you come up with something completely new? Something is bound to sound like something else somewhere, though to some it will and some it won't, as proven in this thread.

In a recent review of my band our 'apparent influences', as they stated, weren't even around when the songs were written as we decided to record a couple of old songs. And one of those apparent influences was Cazals which we'd never heard. The fact they used the word 'apparent' was good though as they covered themselves.

Hey Alex !

Bowie has always talked openly about stealing stuff from everywhere.
He calls it 'his art.'
( I've even got one or two Bowie songs where If you play them backwards they play as someone else's song.)

If you sing the chorus to 'Starman, it's actually stolen from Judy Garland's 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' believe it or not.

'Life On Mars' was also the result of Bowie submitting lyrics to a french composer, but losing out to I think, Paul Anka, then throwing a hissy fit.

That song was called 'My Way' !

Think I've commented elsewhere (or probably even on this thread?) that there is only so many ways that you can 'arrange' three or four chords, so obviously lottsa songs are gonna sound similar, so totally agree with everything said !

I hear folx songs in other folx songs all the time, as probably most folx do.
( Hey! That line was almost like a folk song !! )

'I'm A Man' - Muddy Waters - 'Blockbuster' - Sweet- 'The Jean Genie' - Bowie (and probably another thousand stealing the same song ? )

I'll have you know I took French for three years in High School (incredibly cute teacher) and two more years in college (witty professor).

I should have taken Spanish. But they talk too fast...

But if you steal something directly you can be done for copyright theft...

I didn't have any chance to learn anything but French. I'm learning Spanish now...as I have been attempting to for the last few years. I'll have to find out how to ask people to speak slower.
